2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity, one of the major objectives of which is to raise awareness of biodiversity.

Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth. It is essential for sustaining the natural living systems or ecosystems that provide us with food, fuel, health, wealth, and other vital services.

Humans are part of this biodiversity too and have the power to protect or destroy it. Currently, our activities are destroying biodiversity at alarming rates. These losses are irreversible, impoverish us all and damage the life support systems we rely on. But we can prevent them.

We need to reflect on our achievements to safeguard biodiversity and focus on the urgent challenges ahead. Now is the time to act.Tree Appeal have an ambitious plan to plant as many trees as possible to celebrate this special year, helping to preserve and create wildlife habitats.

To help acknowledge the contribution of our supporters, Tree Appeal are compiling a UK biodiversity tree register, which will be delivered to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. On this page you can see a list of our current Corporate Partners and the numbers of trees they have sponsored. Very shortly we will be making available a downloadable document which will list the individuals who have planted trees through initiatives such as "Dedicate a Tree" and Family Investments.

UK Biodiversity Tree Register -
Local Authority Tree Planting

2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity. In April 2002, the Parties to the Convention committed themselves to achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national level as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of all life on Earth. This lead to the creation of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and, in turn, the Local Biodiversity Action Plan for the place where you live.

At Tree Appeal we are trying to discover the extent of tree planting that has been carried out in the UK in pursuit of these Plans. To do this we are creating a register of trees planted since 2002 and would very much appreciate a few minutes of your time to tell us about your tree planting.

We are aware that large scale plantings, which are usually funded or part-funded by a Forestry Commission grant will be captured centrally.
We are looking to document smaller scale plantings which would otherwise go unrecorded but which nevertheless play a major role in creating long-term habitat and promoting biodiversity.

The UK Biodiversity Tree Register will be delivered to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and will list those individuals, companies, organisations and local authorities who have made a contribution by planting native trees in the UK.

It will only take a few minutes for you to complete the online form - all we need to know is your name, a contact email and the number of trees your Local Authority has planted. Tree Appeal would like to thank you for your time and for helping to make the world a greener place.
