Tree Appeal was launched by Rt Hon Derek Foster MP, DL at Raby Castle in July 2004.

MP Derek Foster helped launch a new environmental initiative. Raby Castle in Teesdale hosted the launch of 'Tree Appeal', designed to promote the planting of native broad-leaf trees. Fountains Associates a Partner Company of Tree Appeal have pledged to plant a tree on behalf of their customers for every job they print.

Representatives from The Wildlife Trusts were there to give their support. Teesdale Enterprise Agency officially received the first batch of trees that were to be planted on their behalf. Twenty saplings were placed in the care of the forester of the Raby Castle estate to be planted in appropriate locations and at the correct time of year.

All trees planted will be native British broad-leaf trees such as oak, beech and ash. As Bob Swinbank, managing director of Fountains Associates explains, "All the paper we use comes from managed sustainable forests. However, we wanted to go a stage further by planting trees on behalf of our customers. We intend to plant native broad-leaved trees, which are not the kind used to make paper but will make a long term contribution to the environment. The important thing is that it helps our customers to 'do their bit'."

'Tree Appeal' gives everyone the opportunity to help deliver local biodiversity targets. Companies taking part in the scheme will be listed on the 'Tree Appeal' web site showing the number of trees that they have been awarded so far. Every February (which is the preferred tree planting month) they can send a representative to one of the official plantings. 'Tree Appeal' gives them the opportunity to make a long-term difference to the local environment. Following the plantings there will be an official awards dinner.
