Tree Appeal Annual Awards Dinner 2006

National and local companies gathered to receive awards at what has become a major event on the environmental calendar. The 2006 Tree Appeal Awards Dinner took place in the leafy surroundings of Whitworth Hall, County Durham.

The gala event took place just one week after Tree Appeal themselves received a major environmental award - "Green Heroes 2006" - an unexpected bonus which added to the celebrations.

The Tree Appeal Awards 2006 were officially opened by Tree Appeal patron, Rt. Hon. Lord Foster of Bishop Auckland who said, "I had the honour of planting the very first Tree Appeal tree at Raby Castle in 2004. It is very encouraging to see such a worthwhile initiative go from strength to strength".

Those receiving awards included, amongst others, Printing.com, "White & Wild" Milk, Stuart Edwards Estate Agents and Groundwork. The awards were presented by Professor David Bellamy OBE, who is also a patron of Tree Appeal. Each award winner was recognised for their important contribution to the environment. Based on their pledges, Tree Appeal expects to be able to plant at least 100,000 broad-leaved trees in the next 12 months.

A week earlier, in a ceremony at Kensington Roof Gardens in London the award of "Green Heroes 2006" was presented to Tree Appeal in recognition of their contribution to the environment. The award was accepted by Professor David Bellamy who said, "Planting the right trees in the right place is the best thing you can do to help heal the environment. Planting trees proves that your company cares about the future."

"We were very pleased to receive the Green Heroes recognition just in time for our Annual Awards Dinner", said Bob Swinbank of Tree Appeal. "We believe Tree Appeal is a very exciting initiative because it gives companies the opportunity to make a real difference. These broad-leaved trees make a significant long-term contribution to the environment and help to combat climate change at the same time."

The last six months have been busy for Tree Appeal, having won the Green Apple "Green Champions" Award at the end of 2005. The award was received on their behalf by Bill Oddie at the House of Commons.
